Biblical sources of Christian social ethics

Here are the reading assignments for Jan. 26 – Feb. 4. Please read the excerpt from David Ford’s intro to Christian theology first (“Chapter 8: Through the Past to the Present: Texts and History,” which was distributed in class on Jan. 21), and then read all the biblical passages, with what Ford says in mind. Please bring a printout of the passages, or a device on which you can read an electronic version of them, to class.

Tues., Jan. 26: Genesis 1:1-2:3; Exodus 3; Exodus 22:26-27; Psalm 19; Psalm 139; Luke 15:1-2, 15:11-32; John 15:13-17

Thurs., Jan. 28: Genesis 3:1-4:16; Exodus 2:23-25, 5:1-23, 14:5-31; Isaiah 58:6-11; Mark 1:14-15; Luke 4:16-21, 10:25-37; John 13:1-20

Feb. 2: Matthew 5-7, 25:31-46; John 6:51-58; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, 12:12-31.

Feb. 4: Daniel G. Groody, Globalization, Spirituality, and Justice, pp. 31-37 and 48-54 (handout, also here for CORE 264A and here for CORE 264B); Gerald Graff & Cathy Birkenstein, They Say / I Say, Part I (bookstore). These readings will be the basis for your first short writing assignment.
